Contact Lens Aftercare: Storing Lenses

After Removing Your Lenses

If you’re joining us from our previous guide- How to Insert & Remove Contact Lenses- then you know exactly what you’re doing when it comes to lens wear. But what about after? 

Once you remove your lenses, you have two options: either you throw them away, or you keep using them. Daily (single-use) lenses MUST be thrown away after one use. However, if you’re trying re-usable lenses like 30-day or 90-day contacts, you can use them again. But you’ll need to clean and store them so that they’re safe for your next use.

How to clean contact lenses

To wash your contact lenses so that they’re clean for your next use, you’ll need to follow these steps:

• Make sure your hands are clean and dry, and remove your contacts.

• Holding the lens between your fingers, rinse it with contact lens solution, rubbing gently to ensure it is fully cleaned.

TOP TIP: You should only use eye-safe solution to clean your lenses. Any other foreign substance (even water) will contaminate your lenses with bacteria. Find out more about contact lens solution here.

How to store contact lenses

Now that your lenses are clean, you’ll need to put them somewhere safe and sterile until your next use. Here’s how:

• Place the contact lenses inside a sterile contact lens case.

• Pour a little fresh eye-safe solution over the lenses so that they’re fully submerged. This will keep them hydrated.

• Close the case carefully, and keep it somewhere safe and clean.

TOP TIP: If you go for long periods of time between lens uses, we recommend checking in on your lenses every so often. If the lenses look a little dry, you can replace the eye-safe solution with some fresh solution to keep them hydrated.
